How to Handle a Stain Before Your Next Big Event

A spill right before an important event feels like a disaster — but what you do in the first few minutes often decides whether the stain comes out at all. Here’s how to give your garment the best chance.

Blot, don’t rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibers and can damage the fabric’s surface. Instead, gently blot from the outside of the stain inward with a clean, white cloth to lift as much as you can without spreading it.

Skip the club soda and hairdryer. Well-meant home fixes often backfire: water can set certain stains, heat from a dryer or iron can bake them in permanently, and colored cloths can transfer dye. When in doubt, do less, not more.

Know your worst offenders. Oil-based stains (salad dressing, makeup, lotion), tannin stains (wine, coffee, tea), and protein stains (blood, dairy, sweat) each need different treatment — which is why a single “miracle” home remedy rarely works on everything.

Time matters more than technique. The faster a stain gets professional attention, the more likely it comes out cleanly. If your event is tomorrow, don’t wait — the fresher the stain, the better the odds.

We offer fast turnaround in Alexandria. At Yates Dry Cleaning, our team is trained to identify and treat stains the right way, and our quick turnaround means we can often rescue a garment before your big day.
