What “Eco-Friendly Dry Cleaning” Actually Means

“Eco-friendly” and “green” get stamped on a lot of dry cleaning these days, but the term isn’t regulated — so it helps to know what’s actually behind it. At Yates Dry Cleaning, it comes down to the specific solvent and process we’ve chosen. Here’s what separates genuinely cleaner cleaning from marketing.

It starts with the solvent. Traditional dry cleaning has long relied on perc (perchloroethylene) — effective, but classified as a hazardous air pollutant and being phased out in several states. The solvent a cleaner uses is the single biggest factor in how “green” they really are, which is exactly why we made the switch to a better one.

We clean with SOLVON K4. Our dry cleaning uses SOLVON K4, a solvent developed by the German chemistry firm Kreussler as the heart of its SYSTEMK4 process. It’s halogen-free — no chlorine, unlike perc — non-toxic, and biodegradable, so it breaks down naturally instead of lingering in the air, water, or soil. It’s also been dermatologically tested with a rating of “Very Good,” so it’s gentle on skin. In plain terms: it cleans as well as the old harsh chemicals, without the baggage.

Gentler on your clothes, too. The same qualities that make SOLVON K4 better for the environment make it better for your garments. It’s gentle enough for delicate fabrics, beading, silk, cashmere, leather, and furs, and it leaves clothes fresh and virtually odor-free — no chemical smell to air out.
